Quick answer: Open mail.google.com (or the Gmail app), enter your Google email and password, then complete two-step verification if it is enabled. Use only the official Google sign-in page—never a link from a random email.

Gmail is still the default inbox for millions of people, but the sign-in screen has changed enough over the years that old blog screenshots no longer match. This guide walks through a normal Gmail login on desktop, Android, and iPhone in 2026, plus the errors people hit most often and how to recover safely.

Always start from mail.google.com or accounts.google.com—not a forwarded “login” link.

Before you sign in

  • Confirm you are using your full address (for example [email protected] or a Google Workspace address).
  • Have your phone nearby if two-step verification or a passkey is enabled.
  • Prefer a private device. On a shared computer, use an Incognito/Private window and sign out when finished.

Gmail login on desktop (PC or Mac)

  1. Open Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.
  2. Go to https://mail.google.com or https://accounts.google.com.
  3. Enter your email address and click Next.
  4. Enter your password and click Next.
  5. If prompted, approve a Google Prompt on your phone, enter an authenticator code, or use a passkey / security key.
  6. When your inbox loads, you are signed in. Optional: open another tab to Google Account Security and confirm recent devices look familiar.

If Google shows “Wrong password,” try the on-screen Forgot password? link or follow our Gmail password reset guide.

Gmail login on Android

  1. Open the Gmail app (preinstalled on most Android phones).
  2. If you see your inbox, you are already signed in—pull down to refresh.
  3. If you see Add account or Sign in, choose Google.
  4. Enter email → Next → password → Next.
  5. Complete two-step verification if asked.
  6. Accept Google’s terms if this is the first Google account on the device.

To add a second Gmail address: profile photo (top right) → Add another account → Google.

Gmail login on iPhone or iPad

  1. Install Gmail from the App Store if needed (or use the built-in Mail app with a Google account).
  2. Open Gmail → Sign in / Add account → Google.
  3. Enter your email and password.
  4. Approve the verification challenge on a trusted device if prompted.
  5. Allow notifications if you want new-mail alerts.

Apple’s Mail app path: Settings → Mail → Accounts → Add Account → Google, then complete the same Google sign-in flow in the popup browser.

Passkeys and passwordless sign-in

Many Google accounts can now unlock with a passkey (fingerprint, Face ID, or device PIN) instead of typing a password. If Google offers “Continue with passkey,” use it on a device you trust. Keep at least one backup method—password plus two-step verification or backup codes—so you are not locked out if you lose that phone.

Common Gmail login problems (and fixes)

  • Endless password loop: Clear site data for google.com, disable VPN temporarily, and try a private window. See also password reset.
  • Verification code never arrives: Check SMS spam, wait a few minutes, or choose Try another way (authenticator, backup codes, or a trusted device).
  • “This account has been disabled”: Follow Google’s on-screen recovery or review request—there is no third-party unlock tool that is safe.
  • Suspicious “Gmail login” page: Check the address bar for accounts.google.com. Fake pages are common; read how to spot fake email login pages.

Turn on two-step verification after you get in

A password alone is not enough in 2026. Once signed in, enable 2-Step Verification and save backup codes. Full steps: How to turn on Gmail two-step verification.

Frequently asked questions

Is gmail.com the same as mail.google.com?

Yes for signing in. Both should send you to Google’s official account chooser and then your inbox.

Can I stay signed in permanently?

On a personal device, yes—Google will keep the session until you sign out or change your password. On public computers, always sign out and avoid “Remember this device.”

Why does Google ask for my phone every time?

New browsers, cleared cookies, VPNs, or a security alert can trigger extra checks. Approving the prompt once on a trusted device usually reduces friction afterward.

What if I forgot which email I used?

Try addresses you still remember at the recovery flow, or check other inboxes for older Google security emails that show the account name.
